The Greenbank Hotel – Commercial Plant Room Installation

The Greenbank Hotel worked with Blue Flame to replace its ageing heating system with a modern, more efficient solution designed for year-round comfort and future growth. The upgrade improved temperature and hot water control while delivering significant fuel and cost savings.

Key takeaways

  • Modernised an ageing 40-year-old heating system with a more efficient solution.
  • Improved heating and hot water control for year-round guest comfort.
  • Added system capacity to support future hotel expansion.
  • Delivered £1,500 in cost savings and 9,652 kWh in fuel savings in one month

A more efficient heating and hot water system, designed for year-round comfort

The Greenbank Hotel is one of Falmouth’s most established hotels, overlooking the harbour and welcoming guests throughout the year. When its ageing heating system began to show its limitations, the hotel needed a more efficient and reliable solution that could support its guests, reduce running costs and help towards its longer-term carbon reduction goals.

The Challenge

The hotel was relying on two 400kW cast iron sectional boilers, both more than 40 years old and fitted with two-stage burners.

With heating and hot water demands continuing throughout the year, the existing system was becoming increasingly inefficient and costly to run. The hotel wanted to modernise its heating infrastructure while making sure the new system could meet its current needs and provide additional capacity for future growth.

Our Approach

With more than 30 years’ experience working with businesses across Cornwall, including hotels and other hospitality settings, we understand the importance of reliable heating and hot water — and of keeping disruption to a minimum.

Working closely with the team at The Greenbank Hotel and Bosch Commercial & Industrial, we designed and installed a new system that would give the hotel greater control, improved efficiency and the flexibility to respond quickly to changing demands.

The installation included:

  • 5 Worcester Bosch GB162 V2 boilers
  • A common flue header
  • A cascade kit
  • Plate heat exchanger hydraulic separation
  • Bosch 8313 controls
  • Variable temperature heating circuits

The Result

The new system provides the hotel with a more responsive and efficient heating and hot water solution, helping to maintain a comfortable environment for guests while giving the management team greater control over the system.

The upgraded system delivers:

  • Consistent and efficient hot water
  • Improved temperature control
  • Faster response to changes in demand
  • Additional capacity for future expansion
  • Greater control over energy use

Added Value

The system can also be monitored and managed remotely by the Blue Flame team, allowing adjustments to be made when needed without always requiring a visit to site.

This gives the hotel added reassurance that its heating and hot water system can be monitored throughout the year, helping to keep things running smoothly for both staff and guests.

The Savings

The results were seen quickly, with the new system achieving:

£1,500 in cost savings in just one month*

9,652 kWh of fuel savings

*Based on 15.54p per unit.

What The Greenbank Hotel Says

“Having worked with other heating engineering companies across multiple different sites, I have come to trust and respect the advice and work provided by Blue Flame. So naturally, when our previous heating system started failing, we were very happy to receive advice and recommendations from them on a solution.

The specification was to provide a modern and efficient alternative to the old technology. When it came to the project specification, it is fair to say that it was entirely achieved.”
