Blue Flame was founded in 1988 by Mark Bolitho and Paul Smith, two qualified heating engineers who started the business with little more than a van and a passion for providing a great service. Over the following 30+ years, Blue Flame grew from a small local heating company into one of Cornwall’s established heating, plumbing, electrical and renewable energy businesses.
As our company grew, so did our expertise, services, and customer base, expanding into commercial work, social housing, landlords, businesses, and renewable technologies. Technology and investment in our people have played a big part in that growth, alongside a continued focus on quality workmanship, customer service, training and apprenticeships.
In 2024, after 35 years at the helm, the founders retired and Blue Flame became 100% employee owned. Two long-standing employees, who had themselves started their careers with the company, became directors — and Blue Flame continues to operate across essential services to thousands of customers.
From two engineers and one van in 1988, to a 100% employee-owned energy company today — we’ve grown by investing in our people, embracing change, and staying true to our Cornish roots.
